Selfie Society — Vanity Climaxing?

In such a beautifully saturated and indefinitely detailed world, why do we choose to continuously photograph our own faces. Selfie Culture anyone?

Conversation around selfie culture is certainly tiring and bordering on exhaustion; for the last five years we’ve chosen to photograph our own faces so much that iPhones now unbox with a pre-loaded ‘selfie’ folder that collects images captured with the inwards facing camera — selfies — a phenomena created by Chinese tourists proving that they were, in fact, where they claimed to be when travelling overseas, a phenomena that’s evolved to become part of our digital subconscious.

However, as Generation Z begins to come of age and we look to develop as a digital movement, it’s fair to assume that selfie society must peak in order for us to move away from our inherent and growing obsession with vanity. Perhaps it’s difficult to connect such a trivial element of life with a larger macro trend but consider a species that looked outwardly, rather than inwardly, perhaps then we could address more of the world’s larger issues. Generation Z (Ages 8–20) are wider thinking. In a world where millennial’s were raised in the relative comfort of the 1990’s before being thrust into the turmoil of 9/11, 7/7 and a double-dip recession, it’s actually no surprise that as a generation, we chose to become more insula, choosing the security of our micro environments opposed to considering the larger world. But Gen Z are different. After being raised, terrorised by Isis, multicultural through waves of immigration and now the controversy of Brexit, they are becoming adults with wide eyes, to which selfie culture will surely begin to fall upon sorely, an unnecessary and more importantly unsatisfactory element of modern life.
